Creme Brulee French Toast

Classic creme brulee flavoring brought to French toast. Caramel sauce prepared on stovetop from unsalted butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup. The warm sauce is spread over the bottom of a baking dish and topped with sliced French bread. A mixture of eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, orange liqueur and salt are poured over the bread and the casserole is chilled overnight. Dish is baked in hot oven until toast is golden brown. Served hot.

Ingredients -

1/2 cup Unsalted Butter
1 cup packed Brown Sugar
2 tablespoons Corn Syrup
6 (1 inch thick) slices French Bread
5 Eggs
1-1/2 cups Half-and-Half Cream
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 teaspoon Brandy-based Orange Liqueur
1/4 teaspoon Salt

 
Preparation:

1. Add butter to a small saucepan, and melt over medium heat.

2. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir until sugar is dissolved.

3. Pour sugar mixture into 9 x 13 inch baking dish.

4. Remove crusts from bread slices. Arrange slices in baking dish in single layer.

5. Whisk eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, orange liqueur and salt in a medium bowl.

6. Pour egg mixture over the bread slices.

7. Cover baking dish and chill at least 8 hours.

8. Preheat oven to 350 F.

9. Remove baking dish from refrigerator, and bring to room temperature.

10. Bake uncovered 40 minutes, until puffed and light brown.

For a nice change of pace experiment with different breads. Try using raisin or cinnamon swirl bread.

Storing French Toast
Dip and soak French toast in your egg mixture, place slices on a cookie sheet and place in freezer. Remove toast when frozen. Package in individual plastic bags.
